Britain and Ireland have long been considered shining examples of advanced and progressive, developed societies.
So how did this happen ?
October 5th 2004: After allowing the Vascular Surgical Society of Great Britain and Ireland 11 weeks without further contact to revise their patient information, we made a further polite contact. Please see the email which managed to get back to us today. Their faux pas accurately sums up the problems we face in this country. It is interesting to note that 2 out of their 5 man Professional Standards Committe are responsible for part of our membership. And we are just the tip of the iceberg...

Dear Mr Farrell
thankyou for your courtesy last Friday, I apologise that I have been unable to reach the original email till now.
The position o fVSS towards sympathectomy, and the advice given is extremely worrying indeed. Despite the fact that the tide is growing against continued unnecessary ETS anyway, it was refreshng that Ms Robey sent the attached letter some months back. However, the original information has remained on your website (patient information). It would be stating the obvious to describe how silly this is. I am sure that all at VSS would agree that bad information is worse than no information.
Whilst we await the advice on ETS to be rewritten, we request that you remove the references to sympathectomy from the patient information section immediately. I do hope this does not sound unreasonable, as this is causing us great concern.
I would be very grateful if you could reply to this email with an
answer as soon as possible.
thankyou

Dear Sir
Thank you for your e-mail, and I apologise for the delay in our reply.
I have discussed your concerns with members of The Vascular Society's Council and on the basis of your comments we will be revising our patient information sheet on thoracoscopic sympathectomy.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

Dear Ms Robey,
I would very much like to begin a dialogue with your organisation, to help you show a more overt awareness of endoscopic transthoracic sympathectomy, its consequences, and the unfortunate industry which propagates it (I make a clear distinction here between certain protaganists, and the good honest surgeons who have made a mistake by believing dubious proETS publications.)
May I please refer you to a link on your website
www.vssgbi.org/patientinf...rosis.html
<www.vssgbi.org/patientinf...osis.html>
I note both the qualification about non endorsement and the disclaimer, however, the real issue here is that your organisation is well placed to give suitable advice, it fails to give suitable advice, and it does damage by pointing out unsuitable advice. Whilst we cannot save those whom have already been damaged, we can act to save those will take the operation next month and next year.
May I then refer you to our website www.noetsuk.com

The Radisson Group is available to help you with your research. Would you please reply.
thankyou for your kind attention
