ETS surgery for sweating or blushing |
Lead | ||
|
I removed my post. I sounded so stupid complaining about my flushing. I just want it to stop. I will just have a crappy life, always hiding....never able to
relax. I know it is not an allergy. unless of course I'm allergic to people. Certain things people say trigger it. I watched the video's you guys
posted, they were very insightful. It's scary, I will sit back for a while and think. I'm going to try medication first. Maybe I'll post some
pictures of my condition. I almost would rather feel dead inside than to feel this torment. I'll update later. Sorry for what happened to you guys, thanks
for the advice. I do not sweat, so maybe make up would work to cover it. I just hate it soooo much.

I dont know much about blushing--as I had ETS for sweat, but was curious about some things in your post. have you ever had a food allergy test? I'm allergic to eggs and will get blush/flush/splotches if i eat anything with a moderate amount of eggs in. i can get away with small amounts in baked foods, but otherwise it's a gamble. have you tried asking your dr about a very low dose of valium or xanax? ( i suggest this referring to what you said about drinking lessening the effects of the blush) do you notice your condition is worse in certain seasons? or is it consistant year-round? given your age I'd hesitate to suggest it could be hormonal...is there a test for those levels? (or maybe birth control hormones?) i'm really stumped on this one, wish i could offer more advice..hopefully one of our members can shed a lil light on what might be able to help you. (or at least give u direction on what to ask your dr) and remember--if you are not comfortable with what your current dr says, you can always get a second opinion

1. Surgery is irreversible - applies to clamping as well, and should be as a last resort.
2. Doctors have no idea why or how ETS 'works' for stopping blushing. It is effective in some cases, not all. It is likely that it works because it eliminates the ..emotion that triggered the blushing (which would qualify it as a psychosurgery). This way, you could rather try medication for the same effect and if you do not like what it dos, simply stop taking it. You could also try cognitive therapy to see if it is linked to anxiety. Whatever you find out it will help you to figure out which approach to take. 3. Your case does not really sound like blushing/flushing and you should not go ahead with a destructive surgery before you actually investigate your condition/know what and why. 4. There is no short cut. To anything. 5. Educate yourself, and do not believe everything. Question it and see if it makes sense. If not, ask more questions. Good luck. Centre for Clinical Effectiveness and Monash University• No systematic reviews, meta-analyses, or clinical trials that evaluated theeffectiveness of endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy for treating facial blushing were identified. However, we have identified four case series related to the request (Drott et al. 1998, Rex et al. 1998, Telaranta 1998, Yilmaz et al. 1996). These studies were conducted in three countries (Sweden, Finland and the Netherlands). • The four case series were not critically appraised because they are prone to bias and have significant methodological problems. These studies represent level IV evidence according to the NHMRC criteria and one should not draw firm conclusions from their findings. • To date, the benefits or side effects associated with endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy for treating facial blushing have not been properly evaluated and reported. Hey...wow. I never thought of allergy. It only happens as an emotional response. I am afraid to take pills, I feel like I"ll be a zombie. I guess I can go
to the DR again. I havent gone in years. I am not on birthcontrol. I have only taken in a couple of times, It seems like it makes it a little worse. Lack of
sleep, the temp outside. All of those things. It seems like it only happens if I get embarassed, cry, laugh alot, or get mad. It's very bright, people look
at me like OMG. it last about 30 minutes. I got embarassed at my moms house, it was painful, I often go to the bathroom and put water on it...it's a deep
deep red. SPLOTCHY. it creaps up my neck, shoulders face chest. It's very noticable. It makes me want to hid behind drinking, or stay in the house. Thanks
for the info on ETS> Could you explain what you mean? What side affect did you get? Also I don't sweat, so maybe they can cut a different nerve. I
don't know. Sorry about what happened to you. thank you for responding. I hate my face....it never has any color in it, until i FEEL some sort of emotion.
than I want to run and hide. It doesnt help to breathe...i've tried. I'm 25, been dealing with this since I was 14 years old. I think I'm a freak.
Another weird thing that happens. If I drink a lot, I get pain in my right side. So I don't like to drink alcohol anymore. I used to do that so i wouldnt
freak. Thanks for all of your help.

1. They do not cut a nerve! They cut the main sympathetic chain! For all conditions! This includes treatment for anxiety. phobia, schizophrenia, addiction, to
reduce stress or for different heart problems: Long QT Syndrome, Arrythimas, Angina Pectoris.
2. If you would go ahead with the surgery, you would be operated at T2 for face or T2-T3. At this level, the surgery is associated with the most severe side-effects, all patients have compensatory sweating, which is no other than disabled thermoregulation. Dr Lin on his website - do your research - now explicitly refutes the 'compensatory' nature of the sweating post ETS. He says it is a reflex sweating. It can be translated as abnormal sweating. You can end up wit his side-effect even if you have the surgery for facial blushing! 3. Talking about zombie! You could be surprised after your op!!!! When it happens with medication, at least you can stop taking it. This is permanent. The last 2 neurologists I saw could not add to it anything else, but to agree. They conceded that the zombie effect can happen in some patients, but they do not know why or how it works... 4. You can find the list of side-effects on this website. Do yourself a favor and put some time into it. 5. Side-effects, their occurrence of severity has very little to do with the experience and expertise of the surgeon. Just remember: they disrupt the autonomic nervous system. It can have catastrophic consequences. Here is an excerpt from an email from an ETS surgeons: we know that we can minimize the numbers of patients with unhappy outcome due to imbalance in their neurovegetative regulation. Failure to follow strict guidelines, due to ignorance, greed etc., will inevitably produce a relevant number of catastrophic results. |

Hello shylotus and Welcome!
I'm glad some of our members have shared their thoughts with you about ETS. Although I have not had ETS myself, I wanted to add something to this conversation based on what I have heard over the years. You say you do not sweat much presently. Well if you have ETS, that will change and possibly will be a dramatic change. It is almost guaranteed that you will experience some degree of compensatory sweat. It is often difficult for people who had excessive perspiration to handle the amount of CS after ETS; you, who isn't expderienced with dealing with sweating, will find it unbearable.....even if you are fortunate enough to not get it as severely as some do. Have you looked in our Photo Album? That will give you some idea of what it could be like. Another thing to consider....ETS sometimes works for blushing but a side effect some get is flushing. I have been told that flushing could be quite severe and can last for hours at a time. ETS does not cure flushing, so be sure you know what the difference is. Some surgeons no longer do ETS for blushing as the side effects (so they say) are the more severe ones. Just the fact that some surgeons have stopped doing it for blushing should be enough to give you an idea that this surgery could be a disaster for you. There is a nice group over at ESFB Channel where you can learn a lot about blushing. I hesitate to send anyone there though because you can get entirely hung up there and will be thinking about your problem 24/7. They've tried all kinds of meds and makeup. It's worked for some; not for others. In the end, it seems the best solution ends up accepting your condition and learning to deal with it as normally as possible. I know that's difficult to imagine, but that's certainly the safest way to go. I am sorry you are suffering with blushing. Certainly feel free to ask questions. I don't know a lot about blushing but others here will try to help as best they can. Carole |

Blushing op ruined my sex life,
man claims 11:10pm Thursday 27th September 2007 Comments (10) Have your say » By Jess Bauldry » A patient is suing a hospital and claiming an operation to cure blushing ruined his sex life. Fitness instructor James Woodward, 32, was embarrassed by his red cheeks, and underwent two courses of laser treatment. But the blushing returned, and he developed excessive sweating, problems with his sex life and became depressed, needing Prozac. Mr Woodward, of Valencia Road, Worthing, claims he was the victim of medical negligence and is suing Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust for £200,000 damages. Before the treatment the fitness instructor suffered problems from excessive facial flushing, which caused problems at work by making it uncomfortable for him to attend meetings. He decided to go ahead with an operation called endoscopic transthoracic sympathectomy in which a medical team cut some of his nerves. A surgeon warned him of possible side effects, including dryness of the hands, and the risk of his eyelids drooping. But he went ahead with the operation on January 15, 2004, at The Royal Sussex County Hospital, in Brighton. According to a writ submitted to the High Court Mr Woodward said that after the surgery he developed difficulties with heavy exercise and sex. He says he now suffers dizziness, depression, chronic fatigue and sexual dysfunction, as well as an inability to cool down, and sore and aching muscles and sensitivity to light. He also developed excessive perspiration from his chest down. He says sweat pours uncontrollably from his chest, pooling on the floor. His clothes become soaking wet and he has to change his bedding several times a night. Mr Woodward said the sweating was linked to emotions such as despair and anxiety, and he either felt too hot or too cold - and cold inside even when he was sweating. He said he was not told of the nature and extent of the sweating he might suffer after the original operation and the risk that his quality of life could be substantially reduced. He claims if he had known of the dangers, he would not have had the operation done. According to the writ the surgeon, Mr Brookes, expressed regret for carrying out the operation at a meeting on February 25 2004. Mr Woodward claims the surgeon said he would not have carried out the surgery if he had read the medical notes and known that the patient had been prescribed Prozac. He paid more than £10,000 for a reversal operation in Italy in April 2004, which was partially successful. http://www.theargus.co.uk...d_my_sex_life_man_claims/ |
